Medical Value Travel & the Recession

Economies the world over are afraid of the dirty little "R" word, the Recession. But the fact of the matter is that recessions are a way for people and companies to stand back, take stock, fix problems, reduce costs and essentially get realistic and get back to the drawing board to chart out a new course for the future. All eyes are on when the Big R will ease up and companies are ensuring that when the new economy kick starts, they are lean, fit and healthy to kick off the blocks sprinting.

The same logic applies to people and the issues that surround health care. Recessions are a time to take advantage of great deals that are available globally. Medical Tourism or Medical value travel as it is more popularly known is an industry that can very easily solve a fair amount of health care problems that are associated with no or very low health insurance coverage in the US.

The Indian private health care system has proven its quality and delivery and value for money proposition over the past many years. In the 1970's through the 1990's India was the favoured medical destination for almost all of the Middle East and South Asia. Over the last few years we have seen an influx of patients from various developed economies like the US, UK, Canada, Australia flock to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore for surgeries that they could not have afforded in their home countries. These people have been able to improve the quality of their life at very little cost and at a risk level often lower than in their home countries.

The quality of Indian medical professionals has been recognised globally and the testament is the large number of doctors and nurses of Indian origin in countries like the US and the UK. The areas where Indian doctors have carved a niche for them selves is in cardiac surgery, beating heart surgery, bariatric or obesity control surgery, orthopedic implants. All the major Indian hospitals that actively participate in Medical Tourism or Medical Value Travel are JCI certified and have facilities better than most hospitals and care giving institutions abroad.

It is time that people especially in the US look at recession proofing their health so that when the Big R has passed over they are fit and healthy to start out sprinting, in the new economy.
